Philadelphia Wedding Photographer featured in Wilmington News Journal

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

Joe Business Card Front FINAL 100808

This Philadelphia Wedding Photographer was thrilled to find the story of Theresa and Scott online at the News Journal’s Web site, based in Wilmington, Delaware. The News Journal is a sister publication of my Courier-Post, as we’re both in the Gannett family. My friend and excellent colleague, Ron Solimon, of Litrato Photography, is the photo editor there. He kindly sent information on how to submit several Delaware weddings for publication.

So congratulations to Theresa & Scott. They are a fabulous couple from New York City, and I hope you read their beautiful story. They’re two of the sweetest people anyone could know, I’m JPG Photography is lucky to call them clients and friends. Thanks so much you two! We were honored to be there for you, and personally, being an amateur wine lover, I loved every second of your reception at the Nassau Valley Winery in Lewes, Delaware! They’ll celebrate their first anniversary this June 28.

Rebecca and I were interrupted during our visit to the Cezanne & Beyond exhibit at the Philadelphia Art Museum Saturday morning with great news.  JPG Photography took three awards in the latest Wedding Photojournalist Association contest! My shot above of Jen Tucker Nieves during a first dance from her wedding in August took third place in the first dance category! Then a shot of Marissa Beatty took 13th place in Emotion. Followed up with a great shot of Megan Buckley and Dan Fass taking 19th place in Food & Drink! Besides having the images placed on the WPJA site, I receive a $125 award and gold medallion. Thanks to all of our fans and beyond! This Philadelphia wedding photographer is overwhelmed with joy because WPJA honors images with the purist photojournalist intentions, like newspaper photographers!

Keep up with JPG Photography as we shoot for more fantastic moments in the next contest!

Best,

Joe G

Classy Union League wedding for Monica and John in Philadelphia

On Feb. 28, Monica and John, had a beautiful Jewish ceremony at the Union League on Broad Street, just a few blocks from City Hall. If you’ve never been to the Union League in Philadelphia, then befriend a member or stay at the adjoining Inn. It’s one of the jewels in this city. This is where former President George W. Bush unveiled his portrait in December. This photojournalist had the pleasure of meeting two politically active Democrats who had a great deal of taste and class. I saw this with some sarcasm because I knew a few people in politics, and they aren’t always this pleasant. Both have worked on campaigns, including some gubernatorial work in New Jersey and most recently, John worked on President Barack Obama’s transition team. As some of you know, political science was my minor in college at The George Washington University, and I cover some New Jersey politics now for the Courier-Post, so we immediately hit it off.

The entire day, these two were pros. They stayed relaxed and really had a great time. The entire event was a pleasure. The had family from all over the country, including outside the country arrive. Everyone was included. The ceremony was really touching, and then they took time to really enjoy the reception. They’re one of the few couples I’ve seen get through and talk to everyone at their wedding, and they had 220+ attend.

My only faux pas was not coming with a jacket. I’m always dressed in a shirt and tie for my weddings, but the Union League calls for an extra layer of sophistication. (Note to self). No matter, it was cold in February, and I happily accepte the extra layer. :)

What immediately struck myself and their hundreds of guests is how classy and refined this wedding as. From the beautiful lighting, great band, amazing flowers and food, as well as that cake. Some of their vendors include:

- Abby Kanak at the Union League; (she was fabulous)

- Barney de Fusco with Uncommon Event;

- Her killer dress was from Cocoa Couture in Hershey, PA;

- The tuxes came from the well-known Boyd’s in the city;

- The band was the Renaissance Orchestra, and Udi Bar-David, of the Philadelphia Orchestra, led the string quartet;

Oh, and how cool was this honeymoon to Belize! Hope you two had a blast!

Congratulations to you both! JPG Photography was honored to be a part of the big day!

Best,

Joe G & Bec & Faye

Kathy & Anthony tie the knot in Abington and Huntingdon Valley

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

_r6q0330-ed-web

Kathy, Anthony and I have a few too many connections, both geographically in Philadelphia, and high school, as well as our suburban Philadelphia childhood in Abington, Huntingdon Valley and Hatboro. I used them all to thoroughly torture both of them during their big day!

First, Kathy. Well, this beautiful woman was my first kiss! Yes, in pre-school, I had a little crush on dear Kathy, and we were in a silly play together. My mother, who lives in Montgomeryville, has the VHS tape to prove it. Scary stuff. So I was sad to see my first crush get married, but fortunately, Rebecca never got jealous. Ha!

Second, Anthony. Anthony and I graduated high school together at La Salle College High School in Wyndmoor, PA. Not only that, but I led the yearbook staff our senior year, and Anthony was one of my section editors. He and Kathy met at Drexel University, and as you can see from a few posts ago, they had a special date at Toys “R” Us that we recreated for some special pictures between the ceremony at the beautiful Roman Catholic parish, Our Lady Help of Christians, and the reception at the classy Huntingdon Valley Country Club. The couple also get ready there, and we found some gorgeous light for these two, even in the cold.

But seriously, these two are fantastic and absolutely meant for each other. One of my couples who I just know would not survive without each other. They’re precious! They had a great night with a choreographed first dance, beautiful flowers from Penny’s Flowers in Glenside, a cake from Rilling’s Bakeries, and music from Cutting Edge DJs.

Congrats to you both! We’re so honored to have been there for you again. I can’t believe we’re adults. Good luck to you both!

Best,

Philadelphia models seek sassy portraits

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

_r6q0070-edps-web

This Philadelphia Wedding Photographer said it was time to have some fun at night! So many of my couples think it’s only good to take pictures at night. I wanted to prove to them that JPG Photography, with a little extra time, could get creative after the sun sets. (Yes, that sounds bad, but you know what I mean!)

We took over Elfreth’s Alley. We grabbed some lighter moments in Swanky Bubbles. We stopped traffic just off of Washington Square and Independence Hall. These all are fantastic places to take photos. But just me and two beautiful models? I don’t want to be selfish. So I grabbed a bunch of my friends from across the region, especially those shooters in the Philly 8, a great network of talented artists.

I met the models, Erika and Whitney, through ModelMayhem, and we met up at friend’s loft, Siohban Edmonds, part of a great photography duo in the city, Dollface Studio. There, we did hair and makeup, followed by the shoot. Everyone had a blast, even with weather at a frigid 10 degrees.

Hopefully these images will serve as beautiful evidence that couples should invest in a little extra time in some night portraits. The hour adds a layer of drama and context that some daytime images never attain. I’m not saying every shot needs to be at night. Far from it, especially in photojournalism. But if you’re already wearing a tux or wedding gown, you already look sexy and sassy! Let’s use everything to our advantage

Best,

Joe G

Philadelphia Business Head Shots and promotional images

Saturday, March 7th, 2009

jpg_4699-ed-web

A friend of mine from Manayunk section of Philadelphia — who shares my K9 passion — asked for some quick head shots this week for his new job at Curriculum Associates, a Massachusetts-based firm selling supplementary education materials to schools. Within 72 hours, JPG Photography delivered.

I met Eric through the Manayunk Dog Park, which he started, and organized fundraisers for. We have a big one next week, called Yappy Hour! It should be great!

But for now, I wish Eric luck in his new job, and I hope the pictures we took here at Philadelphia University, are perfect for his promotional materials!

Best of luck!

Joe G

Photojournalist finds photo story in McKinney, Texas

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

006-web

While I typically offer tons of information about my assignments, couples and experiences, I’m going to refrain from much here.

This is a picture story. This is photojournalism. Nothing fancy has been done to the images. Nothing here is highly manipulated or even touched up much in Photoshop. This, ladies and gentleman is pure, organic photojournalism. To understand me and my style, see these images. Know that these moments are what I wish to capture during your day and events. There is drama, humor, emotion and joy everywhere. These feelings are what I’m looking for when I’m shooting your events.

I participate with a group of some of the best wedding photojournalists in the world in a group called Foundation Workshop. It’s a grueling week in Dallas, which I’ve had the honor of attending the past four years.

Being a veteran of the group, team leaders like my gurus this year Tyler Wirkin and Brooks Whittington, tasked me with the most difficult assignment, finding a photo story in the town square of McKinney, Texas. As a Philadelphia native, this photographer is often in hostile territory in Texas, but I had a blast.

I was honored to have two days to document some of the town’s businesses and residents. Please enjoy the images.

If any of the businesses or residents see an image they would like, please just ask, and they can use it for the Web for free. Any print requests start at $7.99 for a 4×6 plus tax and shipping.

Thanks so much for the hospitality from the folks in McKinney, Texas.

Best,

Joe G
