It’s not every day that this Philadelphia photographer gets to capture one of the most important moments in one his most important friends life, but JPG Photography had that opportunity this May.  One of Rebecca’s brothers (not by blood, but close enough), Matthew, stood by me when I got married.  Now, I got to document all the moments of his wedding to the beautiful Michelle.

As if that connection wasn’t enough, Michelle is JPG Photography’s incredible wedding coordinator.  Needless to say, we love these guys to pieces, and we were thrilled to join them for a weekend in Kennebunk, ME, where Michelle grew up.  (And, no, there were no George Bush sightings, but we did keep a lookout for the Secret Service as we did some stellar formal shots on the rocky coast, just across from the Bush homestead.)

Bec was one of Michelle’s bridesmaids, so she had two assignments — to keep her hands off the camera and not make Michelle cry.  She failed at both.

It was a destination wedding for many guests, and even for Matthew and Michelle, who just bought their first home in New Jersey.  Michelle charmed everyone with the main Maine event — a lobster bake for the rehearsal dinner.  Then, families took time to meander among the quaint town, window-shopping and breathing in the salt air.

While it rained the night before, the sky shone a bright blue for the duration of the wedding day.  In case we had any doubts that Michelle would, indeed, plan the perfect day for herself in New England. The ceremony at Christ Church in Kennebunk was picturesque, and everyone had a blast at the outdoor reception at the Cape Arundel Golf Club!

Michelle loves everything Disney, and she was nothing short of a Disney princess on her wedding day.  Matthew wasn’t so bad himself.  We love you both and were honored to celebrate with you as you begin your “happily ever afters.”

We love you both! And we are so glad to have been there for you!

And a special thanks must go out to John Santerre, a great Maine-based photojournalist who helped big time shooting this day!

VOTE for JPG Photography on Philadelphia’s HOT List and “LUNCHDATE” Photos!

While Bec and I are both native Pennsylvanian’s, and even though I grew up just outside the City of Brotherly Love, this year is a first for JPG Photography. This year, 2009, represents the first year JPG Photography can call itself 100 percent Philadelphian … (Is that a word? :)

While we’ve been in the wedding photojournalism business for five years now, we officially have our Philadelphia Business License, address, and of course, are paying those pesky business priviledge taxes!

So now we have to show Philadelphia what we can deliver to our East Falls neighborhood, and this great city in both artistry, energy and passion. JPG Photography continues to share its desire to be the best, and we hope you agree.

I know we can get to the top of Fox Philadelphia’s HOT List for Wedding Photographers! So please go here and vote AND please leave a comment about what you think of our work.

This means so much to us, and we’re so honored how many friends and Fans we’ve been able to gain on Facebook over such a short period of time!

SO, with that in mind, I have to give a huge proud shout out to a couple of La Salle High School alumni and their rockin drummer. Jason Ager, Austin O’Connor and Sheri Gallagher are coming out with their first album Lunchdate, and we have a great time doing some shots around the city for their cover art. Keep an ear out for them! (And congrats to Sheri! I’m shooting her wedding next August!) It was great checking out Broad Street Philadelphia, in front of The Philadelphia Inquirer Building, The University of Pennsylvania campus, and using the city’s great lunch trucks and even a WaWa!

Best,

Joe G

Fun Photojournalistic Family Photo Sessions

As many of you know, this is a big month for JPG Photography as Rebecca and I move into our first house, thanks to FHA.  We’ll still be in the East Falls neighborhood of Philadelphia, actually only one block away from our current home studio in the City of Brotherly Love.  But more on that later.

By far, the most frequent question we’ve received throughout this home-buying process is (a.) When do you get that great tax credit? and (b.) When are you having children?

We can answer the first question pretty assuredly (i.e. as soon as we file our taxes this year), but the second question requires a bit more pondering on our part.  And we don’t yet have the answer.

In the meantime, however, we’ve had the opportunity to celebrate the absolutely adorable children of some of our favorite past clients.  Our season of kids’ photojournalistic portrait sessions began with little Johnny.  Then, in April, we had the opportunity to photograph Desmond, son of our very first trash-the-dress model, Nikki Bartle, and her husband, Greg.

When Nikki called us up a couple of years ago and said she wanted to trash her wedding dress at the Eastern State Penitentiary, we knew we had a photography pal in the making.  Her enthusiasm for Desmond’s first shoot was just as evident.  What I loved about this shoot near their home near the Willow Grove Mall is that we documented Desmond in his favorite toddler moments – peeking through the crib, climbing on Mommy and Daddy, and all around grinning from ear to ear.  We didn’t have to pose much of anything.  We just stood by and captured life as it happened.

By far, kids are the greatest photojournalistic subjects, especially young kids.  They haven’t yet learned that cheesy camera grin.  They only know to smile when they are absolutely happy with the world.  It’s a grin that is totally unselfconscious, and thus, contagious.

In May, when we were in Roanoke, Virginia for Laura and Chris’s wedding, we had the opportunity to photograph another smiley fellow.  His name was Drew, son of our 2007 wedding couple Chrissy and Nate.  Usually, Rebecca has to work pretty hard making faces, shaking rattles behind the camera, and just basically making a complete fool of herself in order to get a child to laugh (especially as the shoot approaches the ever-important nap time).  But Drew made her job easy.  He just seemed completely happy with life.  Of course, it helped that we had a big John Deere tractor to play on and the most perfect little Drew-sized bench that we stumbled upon during the shoot.

And while I’m still not sure about how to answer the question about when (or if) little Gidjuni children will roam the Earth, I can say that if we do decide to join the ranks of parenthood, it will probably in Pennsylvania. I just hope ours turn out like these kids.

If only all brides and grooms approached their wedding day this relaxed and genuinely thrilled with life, we’d be able to rid ourselves forever of posed, cheesy photos.  Instead, we’d have what I always hope for in my photo shoots – life, captured as its happening.  A story unfolding.

As always, their images are available on Pictage!
