As a Philadelphia wedding photographer, one of my favorite parts of the wedding day is the in-between time. I tell each of my couples that it’s a great idea to leave a little time either before they tie the knot at the ceremony, or before the reception, to do some fun shots of just the two of them. And sometimes we even bring the wedding party.

With Amy and Carlos’ wedding, we started at the Four Points by Sheraton in Northeast Philadelphia. Later, we had a luxurious several hours between the ceremony at Resurrection of Our Lord Church in Philadelphia and the reception at the Northampton Valley Country Club in Northampton, Pennsylvania.

We all put our heads together and came up with an incredible array of photojournalistic portrait locations in the greater Philadelphia area. You might be asking how the words “photojournalism” and “portrait” found their way into the same sentence. As a Philadelphia photojournalist, I despise cheesy posed pictures because they rarely look like the real bride and groom. Instead, I like to take couples on location to places where they can forget the camera and be themselves. Hence, a photojournalistic portrait.

Amy and Carlos began their in-between excursion at the local Pennsylvania state liquor store, where their bridal party had a lot of fun choosing what to imbibe in the limo. Next was a much-deserved trip to Rita’s, a Philadelphia-area favorite, where Carlos and Amy practiced feeding each other cake…I mean, custard and water ice.

Finally, the entire wedding party took over Brunswick Lanes and bowled their hearts out!  It was hilarious to watch Carlos place Amy’s foot in a bowling shoe, almost as if it were Disney’s Cinderella fairytale glass slipper.  We couldn’t resist grabbing a few shots on the nearby pool tables either.

The in-between time allowed Carlos and Amy some great quality time with their wedding party and each other. And they didn’t let a little rain stop them! (Rarely are you alone on your wedding day.) By the time they arrived at the reception, they were ready to party.  The dancing was fantastic, c/o Silver Sound DJ’s, and the cake smashing delightful as always. We love cake smashers!

Amy and Carlos, we loved being part of your day, and we’re so happy for you!  Thanks for being such great individuals.  We wish you many happy years together!

Best,

Joe G & Rebecca

When this Philadelphia Wedding Photographer met Kelli and Nick at the Philadelphia Great Bridal Expo last year, we knew it had to be.  Well, we HOPED that it would be.  Really, really, really hoped!

Not only were Kelli and Nick a great couple whom this Philadelphia photojournalist clicked with immediately, but they were planning a destination wedding in the beautiful Dominican Republic. Rebecca had been on several volunteer trips to the DR through Food for the Hungry’s partnership with Eastern University, and she’d always wanted to take me to this country of palm trees, sugarcane, and plantains that shares an island with Haiti.

Just to go on the record, Rebecca and I LOVE destination weddings, and we THRILL at the opportunity to travel. This year alone, we had the privilege of shooting in Roanoke, Virginia and Kennebunkport, Maine.  But the only time we’ve had the chance to photograph an international wedding was several years ago in Quebec.  Needless to say, we were superbly excited to travel to a tropical island for Kelli and Nick’s big day!

The bride and groom chose a beautiful venue for their family and friends, the Dreams Resort of Punta Cana. Many guests, including Rebecca and I, made a mini-vacation out of the wedding experience by coming a few days early or staying a few days late.  The weather was just what you’d imagine the Caribbean to be — gorgeously sunny, with a couple bouts of refreshing rain in the early evening. The romantic atmosphere was set, and Kelli and Nick’s love fit the ambiance perfectly. Their wedding day was full of smiles, hugs, and laughter.

If you’re considering a destination wedding, here are some tips to take from Kelli and Nick’s day, which honestly went off without a hitch:
–Get organized!  Kelli emailed her guests regular updates, travel agent information, and regional tips (anything from the excursions available at our resort to the CDC guidelines for the area)
–Consider your guest list.  With about 30 guests, Kelli and Nick had the opportunity to spend real quality time with everyone in attendance.
–Hire a good wedding photographer!  While this might sound self-promoting, I recently shot an engagement session for one of my favorite couples.  For their destination wedding, however, they went with the resort photographer and were disappointed with the results.  Certainly, resort photographers can be incredible affordable, but when you hold one of the most important ceremonies of your life in one of the most beautiful venues in the world, it pays to have a photographer document your experience.  Additionally, resort photographers tend to be trained in the “safe shots” — they’re fine with portraits and formals.  With a photojournalist, however, the story of your wedding day is captured in the candid moments that unfold naturally.  These are the memories you want to treasure forever!

One of our favorite parts about a destination wedding is that we arrive early enough to do the rehearsal dinner and stay late enough to do an after-wedding session, if it fit into the bride’s and groom’s schedule.  What was awesome about Kelli and Nick was their desire to do a Trash the Dress session with us the following day.  Kelli had purchased her dress on eBay and was a great sport about letting us rip it into shreds and send her wading with Nick into the Atlantic Ocean.

So Kelli and Nick, thank you so much for allowing us to be part of your family in the Dominican Republic!  It was an absolute delight to document your wedding day for you.

…oh, and that Trash the Dress session was pretty fun too.  ;)

Best! Bec & Joe

Unless you grew up with my wife, Rebecca, or you went to college at Susquehanna University, chances are, you’ve never heard of Selinsgrove, PA in Central Pennsylvania. But if you’re from Selinsgrove, and know the Selinsgrove Speedway,  it becomes a part of you, which is why one of Rebecca’s childhood friends, Emily, decided to have her wedding there.  It’s one town that this Philadelphia photojournalist is always happy to visit.

Rebecca has known Emily from the womb, and she has enough blackmail on her to last a lifetime. (Em — just one word — “Madonna!“) But no blackmail from this wedding.  In short, it was flawless, and Emily was one of the most composed and happy brides I’ve worked with all year.

It’s no wonder because she married the love of her life, John, whom she met at Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania. The ceremony was held at Emily’s childhood church, Sharon Lutheran in Selinsgrove, the place she’d imagined her wedding since she was a little girl. She purchased her wedding attire from the same little boutique where she’d found all her Selinsgrove Area High School dresses for promBride’s Bouquet — and also Lewisburg Bridal.

Emily and John must have been the most popular couple in college because E-town was there to REPRESENT at the reception, held at the Susquehanna Valley Country Club. The weather was absolutely spectacular with great sun and blue sky for this June wedding in Pennsylvania! When I announced for all E-town students or alumni to gather for a group picture, one-third of the 175 guests responded! Needless to say, the reception was a blast, complete with lots of dancing and even a little singing from the groom to his lovely bride. Man, does John have a voice! (Em, he’s a keeper!)

Emily and John, we couldn’t be happier!  We wish you many years of happiness together.
